Wedding photography vs videography: do you need both?

By Basil Studios, Lahore · Updated · 6 min read

The short answer

Photography gives you portraits, prints and an album; videography preserves voices, vows, speeches, music and movement. If the budget only stretches to one, photography is the usual choice (Signature and up adds a same-day highlight reel); if you want both, booking them together means one team and one plan. Basil Studios wedding photography starts from PKR 65,000 per event, wedding videography from PKR 55,000, and Heirloom photography at PKR 385,000 includes a videographer and a cinematic film.

When photography alone is enough

  • —A single small event — a nikah or dholki at home.
  • —You mainly want an album, framed prints and portraits.
  • —The budget only stretches to one; on Signature and up a same-day highlight reel covers the shareable moment.
  • —Family members will film phone clips of the speeches anyway.

When you will want video too

  • —You want to hear the ijab-o-qubool, the dua and the speeches again.
  • —Relatives abroad cannot attend and will watch the film instead.
  • —Your mehndi has performances and dances that photos cannot capture.
  • —Elderly family members are part of the day and you want their voices kept.
  • —You plan to share reels on Instagram and WhatsApp in the week after the wedding.

How to split the budget

There is no fixed rule, but these principles hold for most couples:

  • —Decide which you will look at most in ten years — usually photos for the walls and album, or film for the voices — and give that the larger share.
  • —Do not split so evenly that both end up as single-person coverage of a big event; two photographers and one videographer is often better than one of each.
  • —Spend on the biggest events — mehndi and baraat — and cover smaller ones more lightly.
  • —If one package already includes both, such as Heirloom photography, compare it with booking the two separately.
  • —Leave room for travel if any event is outside Lahore.

Booking photo and film together

When the same studio covers both, the photographers and videographers plan positions together, so nobody blocks anybody at the nikah or on stage, and one shot list covers both crafts. You can book any photo tier with any video tier, and the combined quote is confirmed the same day on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both a wedding photographer and a videographer?

+

Not always. Photography alone suits a small event or a tight budget; Signature and up also include a same-day highlight reel. Add video if you want the vows, speeches, dances and voices kept, or if family abroad will watch the film instead of attending.

If I can only afford one, should I choose photography or video?

+

Photography is the usual choice — it gives prints and an album, and on Signature and up a same-day highlight reel as a shareable clip. Choose video first if sound and movement matter more to you than portraits.

Is there a package with both photography and video?

+

Yes. Heirloom wedding photography at PKR 385,000 includes two photographers, a videographer and a 3–5 minute cinematic film. You can also combine any photography and videography tiers into one quote.

What is the difference between a highlight reel and a wedding film?

+

A highlight reel is a short clip of about a minute for WhatsApp and Instagram. A wedding film is longer, uses synced audio from the nikah and speeches, and is edited as a story.

How much do wedding photography and videography cost in Lahore?

+

At Basil Studios, wedding photography starts from PKR 65,000 per event and wedding videography from PKR 55,000 per event. Signature is PKR 165,000 for photography and PKR 145,000 for videography.
